The route of this extension branches off Midland Metro line one East of the current depot at Wednesbury Great Western Street and is 11km in length. The route will serve Brierley Hill via Dudley with around 7km of the route using a disused railway corridor.
There are 17 tram stops on this route (including four provisional ones) and park and ride provision is included.
Investigation is taking place as to whether sections of the route can be operated using batteries rather than traditional overhead wires. An additional tram depot will be needed to accommodate the extended fleet of trams that will run services on this extended route.

What is the outline programme for delivery?
The Transport and Works Act Order documentation for the Wednesbury to Brierley Hill extension can be found on the Transport for West Midlands website Transport for West Midlands website. This was granted by the Department for Transport (DfT) in 2005 and planning permission was implemented in 2009.
The government recently announced £250m funding for transport infrastructure in the West Midlands from the Transforming Cities Fund which will be used to partly fund this extension.
Some preparatory work has already been completed with vegetation clearance and ecological surveys taking place during 2017. Currently we are out and about carrying out additional structural surveys works on bridges along the route.
Passenger services are expecting to begin to Dudley by late 2022 and Brierley Hill by late 2023.
