Essential Engineering Works

The tram line to Wolverhampton was originally built in 1999 and the tram track needs replacing between Priestfield and The Royal. The Midland Metro Alliance is carrying out essential engineering works along Bilston Road, working on behalf of the West Midlands Combined Authority.

Extension Completion

The Track Renewals will begin on the 11th June 2017 and will be completed on the 2nd December 2017.

Frequently Asked Questions

Wasn’t the track renewed a few years ago?

Although the tram track between The Royal and Wolverhampton St George’s was renewed in 2014/2015, the tram track between Priestfield and The Royal was not.

Will this affect my business?

Bilston Road has remained open for business throughout the project with access to frontages also maintained for the duration of the works.

Can I still get to the shops?

Yes, access to frontages has been maintained.

When will the works finish?

Midland Metro Alliance will complete the works and hand the project over for testing and commissioning 1 December 2017. The road will reopen in both directions from Saturday 2 December 2017.

Will the tram still operate?

During the works, the Midland Metro tram service will operate between Priestfield and Grand Central, Birmingham. The Midland Metro tram service will no longer serve Wolverhampton St. George’s and The Royal from the end of service on Saturday 10 June 2017 for the duration of the essential engineering works.

Trams will continue to operate for customers between Grand Central and Priestfield while testing and commissioning activities take place.

Subject to essential testing and commissioning activities being successfully completed the tram service to Wolverhampton St. George’s will resume on Sunday 10 December.

Will there be a replacement bus service?

A replacement bus service will be in operation for the duration of the works to ensure passengers can complete their journeys. For timetables and bus stop details, please visit the National Express website.

Will I still be able to walk along Bilston Road?

Pedestrian access has been maintained for the duration of the works.

Will I still be able to park at Priestfield?

Yes, the Park & Ride at Priestfield will be open throughout the works.

I am a metro travel pass holder, can I get a refund?

We recommend you contact the provider of your season ticket to discuss your options.

How will this affect road users?

From Sunday 11 June 2017, there will be signed diversions in place. Please refer to the interactive map below.
